The Upper Midwest American Indian Center (UMAIC) was established in 1937 to support American Indian people in the urban area. In 1961 UMAIC was incorporated as a non-profit agency through the state of Minnesota. The organization is dedicated to supporting American Indian people from all tribes in connecting with each other, gaining educational and economic advancement, and practicing their American Indian culture.
Foster care programUMAIC's Bi-Azhe-Giiwen “Come Back Home” program addresses foster care and adoption needs of American Indian children and families. We help people become licensed foster parents through Minnesota's Department of Human Services so that they can care for their young relatives in foster care and other American Indian children and teens. We also support foster parents in adopting American Indian children once parental rights have been terminated from their biological parents.
